The Liberia Media Center was established in 2005 as a legally registered non-for-profit media and communication firm that fosters local development through the utilization of communication and information sources. LMC exist also to assist media and civil society with professional services in a wide range of areas, including, outreach and mass communication. LMC provides a forum for the periodic assessment of media courage of significant national and international events, facilitates capacity-building programs for civil society and journalists, and renders professional services and awareness to the media, civil society groups, and the public at large.
LMC is an outstanding specialized communication and media organization in Liberia.
LMC has worked with several international organizations on several projects including The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), Internews, DAI – LAVI, BudgIT, Palladium, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), IREX Liberia, the World Bank, the European Union, Open Society Initiative for West Africa, Free voice (Netherlands), International Media Support, International Center for Transitional Justice, the University of Boston in Massachusetts and Carter Center, etc.
The LMC has collaborated with and conducted for the World Bank its Client Survey in Liberia to access the Bank’s operation and performance in the Country since 2017.
With support from the World Bank, the LMC did a nationwide research to assess the media penetration in Liberia in 2010. This research followed a previous LMC initiative that looked into the reach and penetration of newspapers in Grand Bassa and Margibi counties.
The LMC in 2008 conducted a perception survey for the Liberia Extractive Initiative Transparency Initiative (LEITI) titled “Bridging the Communication Cap.” The overarching objective of the survey was to facilitate the development of the LEITI Communication plan.
In 2010 and 2011, the LMC worked with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to conduct a nationwide awareness on Open Budget Initiatives (OBI) under the Non-State Actors Arrangement.
In 2017, the Liberia Media Center was recruited as a Technical Research Institute (TRI) by the Ministry of Finance and Development under the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to conduct the Liberia Country Self–Assessment Study under the Corporate Governance Pillar.To carry out the study, the LMC conducted Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and Desk Reviews with key stakeholders in both the Government and the private sector.The LMC in collaboration with the National Elections Commission (NEC), the Electoral Assistance Division of the United Nations, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) conducted a Baseline Study on Civic and Voter Education in Liberia. The study was conducted by the Liberia Media Center with funding from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The study provides information that would enhance civic education and effective communications for inclusive voter registration and other processes associated with elections in Liberia. The findings of the study was used to develop a long-term civic voter education strategy for the commission. The survey utilized both quantitative and qualitative research techniques that incorporated the conduct of a field study, focus group discussions, desk reviews, and key informant interviews. Currently, the LMC is working with the Multi-stakeholder Forest Governance Accountability Project (MFGAP) with funding from the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) in collaboration with Palladium.
