“Strengthening sustainability for the survival and operation of the Liberia Media and improvement of the Liberian media landscape”

The project titled, “Strengthening sustainability for the survival and operation of the Liberia Media and improvement of the Liberian media landscape” came against the backdrop of considering training as one of the areas in the media landscape of the Liberia that needs to be strengthened to foster professionalism and sustainability in the next decade or more. The project was designed to help sustain the LMC in providing improved quality services commercially through which the Center can continue to update journalists and improve the qualities of services delivered and contents gathered and transmitted to the public in the practice of basic and thematic/specialized journalism to meet requirements of international best practices.

The LMC, built upon lessons learned and best practices from years of experiences during implementation of some past and present projects by the center, including the INFOMATRAC Project sponsored by the RNTC, the IREX Community Radio Training Project under the auspices of USAID, and the Liberia Media Development (LMD) project sponsored by the Internews with support from USAID. Under this project, the LMC provided technical training to those who aspire to the media world and updated practitioners some of whom were recommended by UNICEF.

The center in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF Supported media capacity building through partnership with and training of key partner community radios and Monrovia based journalists to facilitate improved reporting and access to accurate information by the population about issues relating to the situation of women and children in Liberia (especially in regards to improving hygiene practices, Nutrition, Education, and EVD), and assess impact of radio messaging.

Under the agreement, the LMC, as implementing partner, was tasked with several key activities which spanned over a period of one year (December 22, 2016, to November 30, 2017). The activities are as follows:

  • Monitoring of 36 radio stations by 15 monitors across the country;
  • Providing training for 50 journalists and radio station monitors;
  • Conducting two bi-annual surveys;
